Since the last time we ran a feature on shinguards, there have been several fresh, high-profile new options added to the market. Picking a new pair is often a pretty important decision, especially when you consider the fact most players end up wearing the same pair for several seasons at a time. In fact, I can only remember switching my guards once or twice in the past ten years!

Below, you will find pics of the guards on leg. The left leg has just the sleeve/guard, while the right leg gives you an idea of how it looks under a sock. If you are currently wearing a different pair of shinguards that you’d recommend, let us know what they are in the comments below.

Also, through Feb 28th, you can get 15% off any shinguard purchase by using code FEBGUARDS at soccer.com.

Storelli Bodyshield Leg Sleeve

Storelli Bodyshield Leg Sleeve

Retail: $29.99
Key Feature: Leg Sleeve with added padding around the calf.

If you are going to pick up a pair of these, note that you are still going to need a pair of slip in shin guards to protect your shins. Storelli looked to create the first and only armored shin pad sleeve, offering protection to the calf area where you normally wouldn’t have any protection. Slipping them on is easy, and they have gripped panels on the top and bottom to keep them locked against your leg. Personally, I didn’t find them to be tight enough out of the box, and most guards already come with some sort of additional sleeve. Where these will be most useful is if you feel the need for added protection that you don’t currently get from your guards.

G-Form Shin Guards

G-Form Pro-S Shin Guard

Retail: $29.99
Key Feature: One piece sleeve/guard that hardens on impact.

G-form has continued to make huge strides on the soccer market over recent seasons, as their guards become a popular option for players. Designed to harden on impact, the guard has a soft foam feel in its natural state. Very lightweight with full impact protection, plus they are built into a sleeve you can throw in the washing machine. There is a lot to like about these! Slipping them on is very easy, and they fit comfortably in place thanks to the fact they are built with multiple foam pieces. Definitely a top market option.

Nike Protegga Pro Shin Guards

Nike Protegga Pro

Retail: $39.99
Key Feature: Sleeve plus a guard insert that is designed to be flexible and form around the leg.

Here lies the one guard on the list that comes with a separate sleeve that you slip them into. The sleeve itself is very Nike-esque, a thin piece of material that has a compression stretch to it. There is no pocket for the guards, they simply slip under the sleeve and against your leg. The guards themselves have a L and R configuration, so different shapes for each leg. Starting off, they feel very rigid, but Nike has formed them with grooves that flex to make them more form fitting. it will take some bending, but you can easily mold them to your leg shape. The material used is a high impact K-resin shell with a Phylon-molded foam backing, giving you a two tier protection system.

Puma FUTURE Shin Guards

Puma FUTURE 18.1

Retail: $54.99
Key Feature: One piece sleeve/guard with a compression foam shell.

There are a lot of similarities between the design of the FUTURE guards and the G-Form guards. The one big difference is that Puma use a one-piece design, with a larger surface area protected by the foam padding. Built into a compression sleeve, they offer a seamless, low profile fit that hugs your foot very well with no slipping. When you slip them on for the first time, they don’t really feel like they are going to offer a lot of protection. But, slam your first against them and you quickly see how the material reduces the amount of impact and protects extremely effectively.

C6 Guards

C6 Agility Generation 3

Retail: $144.99
Key Feature: 100% carbon fiber shin guards with aerospace grade protection.

Even after testing these latest guard releases (and more), I still go back to the C6 as the absolute best of the best currently available on the market. They come with a very high price point, but they really are worth the investment. I’ve been wearing mine for the past few seasons and I love the extremely thin profile (they are so much thinner than any other guards currently available) that sits perfectly in place under your socks, while still providing excellent protection. If you are on the market for something long term, these are absolutely worth checking out! Note that they don’t come with any sleeves, you will need to buy separately.

Mizuno Rebula MIJ – Picking the Right Size http://www.grindex.com/en/?2018/02/14/mizuno-rebula-mij-picking-the-right-size/ http://www.grindex.com/en/?2018/02/14/mizuno-rebula-mij-picking-the-right-size/#respond Thu, 15 Feb 2018 07:22:03 +0000 http://www.grindex.com/en/??p=54621 Mizuno Rebula MIJ Fit

If you checked in on our most recent Mizuno Rebula MIJ feature, you might recall that sizing became an area of contention. Normally, I can be pretty exact in how a boot fits, but there was something a little different about the Rebula. In the “Fit, Size and Shape” section, I wrote the following:

Should you go up a half-size? Man, that is a tough one. Normally, I can answer the size question very quickly. But, with the Rebula things are a little more challenging. While a half-size up will be more accommodating from the beginning, the problem is the MIJ material does stretch. So, over time there is a likelihood that they will overstretch. From a personal perspective, I’d stick with my regular size knowing that it will take a few wears for them to break in. Keep a tried and trusted pair on hand as you break in the Rebula!

With this question in mind, I requested a half size up in the latest colorway just to see what type of difference it would make. Featuring a White/Black/Silver, this is also one of the cleanest designs we have seen on the Rebula to date. The addition of a silver shimmer across the signature roadrunner logo creates a standout effect in play. This past week, I broke them out into a game and quickly discovered that the additional size created a very different type of fit, and it definitely impacted my opinion from the above.

Picking The Right Size

So, normally I wear a 9US and that is what I wore when I originally tested the Rebula. It produced a very snug fit and I had to loosen the laces right to the bottom rung in order to make them feel more comfortable. They ended up being easier to wear as the k-leather upper loosed over time, but they were never going to be the most comfortable boot in the world.

Stepping into the 9.5US was a very different experience.

Adding a little extra room through the upper resulted in a much more efficient fit. First, I didn’t have to loosen the laces to get my foot into the boot, which is a definite positive right off the bat. Even the length proves more effective. The general construction and shape of the boot is designed to be a little tighter, pretty typical for a k-leather release. But what is different here is how the CT Frame provides additional strength to the upper material, allowing it to keep its shape over time. You will appreciate the additional room in the boot when you take them out of the box, the fit is just so much more natural. So my advice is to definitely consider ordering up a half size for just the right fit!

UA Magnetico Pro – Zero Break-In Time Needed? http://www.grindex.com/en/?2018/02/12/ua-magnetico-pro-zero-break-in-time-needed/ http://www.grindex.com/en/?2018/02/12/ua-magnetico-pro-zero-break-in-time-needed/#respond Mon, 12 Feb 2018 21:44:22 +0000 http://www.grindex.com/en/??p=54605 UA Magnetico FG

Last week, Under Armour released the Magnetico Pro with the tagline “a boot with zero break-in needed and fitting true to a player’s form.” Talk about a bold statement. If you are going to claim you have created a boot that takes zero break-in, you better be sure that you have it right.

A pair arrived in late this week, so I took the opportunity to get them right out onto the pitch to see what they have to offer. No pressure. The results? All extremely positive. Like, seriously, I’m left wondering how in the world a boot can fit so naturally and comfortably right out of the box. Under Armour has nailed it with an upper material that stretches very naturally across your foot without causing any comfort issues. It actually feels like a super thin layer of flexible material, almost as if you’d sprayed a layer of flexi rubber right onto your feet. A wonderful fit. The image below with the boots on foot gives you an idea of how the material flows as you flex your foot.

Check the UA Magnetico out more at soccer.com.

UA Magnetico FG On Foot

Over the coming week, we will be testing these out more just to see what they have on offer and how that upper material plays out over time. Will it overstretch or have durability issues because of how pliable it is? That is something we will be looking to figure out. But out of the box, they really are a boot that need zero break-in time.

When it comes to actual tech specs, here is what else you need know about the UA Magnetico Pro:

  • UA FORMTRUE TECHNOLOGY: Flexible auxetic upper and toebox form instantly to your foot for custom fit and barefoot touch.
  • CHARGED CUSHIONING®: Absorbs impact and converts it into ultra-responsive quickness.
  • DYNAMIC SOLEPLATE: Ultra-lightweight chassis enhances foot’s natural ability to accelerate and flex in any direction.
  • OPTIMAL TRACTION SYSTEM: Strategic blend of bladed, rounded, and conical studs for agility and quick direction changes on the pitch.

Choosing Your Next Signature Messi Colorway http://www.grindex.com/en/?2018/02/11/choosing-your-next-signature-messi-colorway/ http://www.grindex.com/en/?2018/02/11/choosing-your-next-signature-messi-colorway/#respond Sun, 11 Feb 2018 22:33:52 +0000 http://www.grindex.com/en/??p=54592 Messi Nemeziz Collection

If there has been one commonality between recent signature Messi releases, it has been how clean the colorways have been. adidas has begun releasing a new Messi Nemeziz along with each new pack they introduce to the market, with each edition featuring a series of colors that is just a little different than the standard Nemeziz release. This has dramatically increased choices for fans who want the same look as the Barca maestro. So, how exactly does one pick the right pair?

As you’d imagine, it has a lot to do with personal preference. Whether it is the similar colors to match your kit, or just a desire for a particular lead color, there are enough options out there to match different tastes. For example, the options currently available on the market include:

Messi adidas Nemeziz Colorways

The one key feature of Messi releases is that they come in both a laceless and a laced version, or Messi 17.1 and Messi 360 respectively. If you watch Messi play, you will know that he continually chooses pairs that feature laces. For that reason, I’m only going to focus on his favored laced 17.1 boots through this post. Of course, there are a lot of other major modifications on his own personal pairs that we don’t get on the market release, but at least having laces gives you a similar on feet feel to what Messi himself has.

Personally, I’m a much bigger fan of the laced version as opposed to the laceless version. Having the ability to really customize your fit by tightening the laces is an added bonus. You could easily wear them without laces, but when you are investing in a top tier boot, having the most efficient fit across your foot through play can only help elevate your game.

Nike Introduce Merlin 2018 Match Ball http://www.grindex.com/en/?2018/02/10/nike-introduce-merlin-2018-match-ball/ http://www.grindex.com/en/?2018/02/10/nike-introduce-merlin-2018-match-ball/#respond Sat, 10 Feb 2018 19:35:42 +0000 http://www.grindex.com/en/??p=54584 Nike Merlin Soccer Ball

This past week saw Nike release several innovative new pieces to their collection, with the 2018 Merlin Match Ball being a key addition. Set for use in the second half of the year when new seasons kicks off, this is a ball that will definitely capture fan attention for all the right reasons.

So, what makes this one so special? For the first time, ACC (All Conditions Control) technology has been applied to a soccer ball. The result is a ball with optimal touch and control—no matter the weather, no matter the pitch. The new Merlin is designed with a larger striking surface, by reducing the number of panels for a more pronounced sweet spot. This meticulous attention to detail makes it worthy of being the official ball of the English Premier League, La Liga, and Serie A.

Nike Merlin EPL Ball

Nike created a larger striking surface across the ball by reducing the traditional 12-panel construction to just four panels. This also reduced the number of seams by 40 percent, eliminated hard spots, opened up the ball and created a more pronounced sweet spot.

The ball is constructed of a latex bladder (instead of a traditional rubber) enveloped in proprietary materials to promote more consistent air pressure and keep its shape. Debossed grooves and 3D inks (these are engineered to dry at levels and locations that vary by millimeters) rise as they dry during the printing process further improve aerodynamics and the feel of the ball. Secondary and tertiary colors serve to catch players’ eyes and help them to identify spin, speed and trajectory as quickly as possible.

Stay tuned for more details on the balls release in summer 2018!

Nike Mercurial Vapor 360 Elite Released http://www.grindex.com/en/?2018/02/08/nike-mercurial-vapor-360-elite-released/ http://www.grindex.com/en/?2018/02/08/nike-mercurial-vapor-360-elite-released/#comments Thu, 08 Feb 2018 17:35:53 +0000 http://www.grindex.com/en/??p=54558 Nike Mercurial Vapor 360 Elite

For Nike Mercurial Vapor fans. there is a new edition of the fabled speed boot available that is sure to elevate your game. With 20 years of innovation and experience, the Mercurial series has become the signature boot-of-choice for the fastest players in the game. Designed for the perfect fit, the Vapor 360 Elite wraps your foot in Flyknit to respond effortlessly to your movements. This is a much more dynamic style boot than previous versions, with the upper offering a remeniscent feel to the recent Flyknit Ultra boots that Nike released.

So, what are the key characteristics of this latest release? Here is what Nike has to say about them.

Mercurial Vapor 360 Ankle Cut

FIT

When your foot slips within the boot, you compromise speed. The Vapor 360 was designed to eliminate unwanted movement, with Flyknit construction that wraps the entire foot, and a sockliner that interlocks with a new internal structure for maximum response.

Nike Vapor 360 Elite

TOUCH

Rather than applying Nike All Conditions Control (ACC) as an outer layer, ACC is embedded into the Flyknit—eliminating additional skin, while remaining tough against the elements. Micro-textured Flyknit provides precision ball control at top speed, and an updated swoosh on the toe box features a textured finish for control when sprinting with the ball.

Mercurial Vapor 360 Traction

TRACTION

In a Mercurial first, a minimalist underfoot provides traction only where you need it—aggressive acceleration in the forefoot, braking in the heel. The soleplate has been eliminated between the studs in place of foot-hugging Flyknit, for a sensation that the boot disappears on your foot.

OTHER BENEFITS

  • 1-piece upper wraps under the foot for an adaptive fit.
  • Micro-textured Flyknit construction provides touch at high speeds.
  • Podular plate system with an internal chassis flexes for responsive traction.
  • Swoosh design trademark on the toe has a matte finish to help provide traction on the ball.
  • All Conditions Control (ACC) technology provides optimal ball control in both wet and dry conditions.

Unfortunately, the introduction of the boot is set to be more limited edition style, so they won’t be readily available immediately. The first set of limited pairs will be available on 2/14, and you will have to sign up for the chance to get your pair first.
